Descripción decolonial |
The Old Arsenal of the Spanish Navy at La Puntilla, Old San Juan, unfolds a narrative entrenched in military history and strategic transition. Its classical architectural details, from Tuscan columns to a Roman arch, resonate with the building's historical significance, as an emblem of power under Spanish colonial and US imperial rule. The Arsenal played a crucial role in negotiating the transition between the Spanish and American empires. After the US invasion of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines in 1898, as per the Treaty of Paris, the erstwhile insular colonies of Spain transitioned to American rule. The Old Arsenal hosted the last stand of the Spanish Empire in the Americas. It was there that the US military permitted Spanish troops to linger until their departure—a historic episode imprinted in the Arsenal's rich legacy and resonant in Puerto Rico's enduring struggle against colonialism and military occupation.
