Berlín Slum in Ponce
Description
House made with pieces of tin from garbage barrel lids, fabric and pieces of wood. There is a woman and a girl squatting in front of the house with cooking utensils. Around the small house there are shoes, several containers, and trash. On the right side there is a man standing right next to another building that is made with pieces of wood and zinc, and has exposed roof beams with no roofing material covering them. In the distance there are other houses next to each other and there are also palm trees, and mountains that are part of the landscape. This is the slum called Berlín in the town of Ponce. Due to the living situation in these slums the Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration (PRRA) approved the construction of the Barriada Morell Campos Project.| Origin Name |

| Descripción decolonial |
The image of the makeshift house in Berlín Ward, Ponce, constructed from discarded materials, symbolizes the systemic marginalization and coloniality of power faced by women and Afro-descendant communities. The woman and girl, depicted amidst poverty and surrounded by debris, highlight the disproportionate impact of colonialism on their living conditions. The juxtaposition of their humble dwelling against the backdrop of better-resourced structures and distant mountains underscores socio-economic disparities perpetuated by historical and systemic injustices. The PRRA's response with projects like Barriada Morell Campos reflects attempts to address these inequalities, yet the persistence of such scenes underscores the enduring challenges of inequality and marginalization in Puerto Rico's socio-economic landscape.
