Etiquette Class at a Community Center

Description

Group of women and girls inside a classroom listening to a reading in a community center. The building they are in is made of wood, has double wooden doors, wooden floor, and wooden windows. It is visible that the windows have curtains and that the curtains have a floral pattern. In the center of the classroom there is a desk with what appears to be a bulletin board and on top of that is a flower vase. One of the girl is standing reading from a book to the others attending the class. This is an etiquette class offered at one of the Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration (PRRA) community centers.

Descripción decolonial
Integral human development in Puerto Rico during the Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration (PRRA) era involved community empowerment with a particular focus on women and girls. In the wooden community center, women and girls engage in etiquette classes aimed at fostering community spirit and social responsibility. While these initiatives promoted better living conditions and civic values, tensions arose between local empowerment and top-down government control. The PRRA's activities, directed by social workers, aimed to correct perceived negative traits and instill positive ones, reflecting a colonial intent to transform Puerto Ricans into ideal American citizens. This duality highlights the complex interplay of modernity and coloniality in Puerto Rican society.
