Ramón Emeterio Betances House - Mayagüez - 2011 00027

Description

Ornamental detail above the columns from the facade of the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch motifs. The ornament consists of a symbol of a star inside a sphere. Under the sign elevate the mixtilinear arches accentuated with a molding. You can also see the column capitals from where the arches elevate. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.
