Ramón Emeterio Betances House - Mayagüez - 2011 00024
Description
Detail of a corner and the lateral entrance of the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. The corner is articulated with a pedestal with ornamental panel from which elevate a pair of plain shaft column. Above them elevate the mixtilinear arches that distinguish the residence facade. From the pedestal there is a metal railing decorated with flower and leaf motifs. These elements delimit the porch or the house gallery where also stand out a double leaf door with panels, louvers and ventilation fanlights. The lateral entrance is accentuated with a gate flanked by pillars. The house is elevated on a podium and is made of masonry, matched lumber and zinc. Its surface is yellow with white details. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.| Origin Name |
