Description

View of the lateral facade from the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. From this angle stands out a pedestal and from it elevates a plain shaft column and a mixtilinear arch accentuated with a molding and decorated with a star inside a sphere motif. It is also visible a metal railing with leaf and flower motifs, a double leaf door with panels, louvers and a fanlight window for ventilation. The window has grilles and an air conditioner console. On the side there is also a stair that leads to a double door that has an appentice supported with brackets. The stair parapet is decorated with an urn and the landing has a chess motif. The eave support is also articulated with a series of brackets. The house is made of masonry and matched lumber, and the surface is painted yellow with white details. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.
