Description

View of the facade and lateral entrance from the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. The main section of the house facade shows a pedestal, a plain shaft column, a metal railing with leaf and flower motifs, a mixtilinear arch accentuated with a bracket and an ornament of a star inside a sphere. In addition, stands out a window that integrates an air conditioner console and a grille decorated with spiral motifs. The doors are double leaf with louvers, panels and ventilation fanlights. On the side stands out a stair whose parapet has ornamental urns. This section of the stair and the lateral door is covered with an appentice supported with brackets. It also stands out a fence that has a low wall crowned with grilles and interrupted by pillars. The house is elevated on a podium is made of masonry and matched lumber, and its surface is yellow and white. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.
