Ramón Emeterio Betances House - Mayagüez - 2011 00020
Description
Arch from the lateral facade of the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. The mixtilinear arch is accentuated with a molding and decorated with stars inside spheres motifs. The columns where the arch elevates are plain shaft. The pedestals give support to the columns and frame the metal railing with leaf and flower motifs. The eave rests on curve brackets. The house has a podium made of masonry and matched lumber and the surface is yellow with white details. It is also visible the fence that delimits the residence, which is articulated with a low wall crowned with grilles and interrupted by pillars. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.| Origin Name |
