Description
Lateral facade from the house of Ramón Emeterio Betances in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. This section of the house is elevated on pillars and the walls are made of matched lumber. The windows are characterized with louvers and ventilation fanlights. One of the windows has an air conditioner console. The eave rest on curve brackets. The elements that characterized the main facade gallery are also partially visible, among them, there is a pedestal, a plain shaft column, the metal railing with leaf motifs and a mixtilinear arch with a grille decorated with a star inside a sphere motif. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.| Origin Name |
