Detail of a corner from the facade of the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. The metal railing is distinguished by leaf motifs and is interrupted by pedestals from where rise the columns that give support to the mixtilinear arches ornate with star inside of a sphere motifs. The door is double leaf with panels, louvers and fanlight for ventilation. The lateral facade arch integrates a grille. The ceiling shows the beams and the eave that rests on curve brackets. The house is made of masonry and matched lumber. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.| Origin Name |
