Description
Detail of the railing from the gallery of the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. The metal railing is distinguished by the ornaments with leaf and flower motifs. This railing is interrupted with a pedestal with an ornamental panel. Behind the railing is partially visible a double leaf door with panels and louvers. The gallery floor is characterized by a chess motif. The house is made of masonry and matched lumber, and the surface is painted yellow with white details. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.| Origin Name |
