Ramón Emeterio Betances House - Mayagüez - 2011 00011

Description

Details from the gallery of the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. The columns are paired and are characterized by the plain shaft. From them elevate five mixtilinear arches accentuated with moldings and ornate with stars inside spheres motifs. In addition, it is visible a double leaf door with panels and fanlight window for ventilation. The ceiling shows beams and the eave rests on curve brackets. The house is made of masonry and matched lumber. The house surface is yellow with white details. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.
