Description
Lateral facade of the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. From this angle stand out a pedestal from which elevates a column with plain shaft and a mixtilinear arch accentuated with a molding and ornate with a star inside a sphere motif. It is also visible a metal railing with leaf and flower motifs, a double leaf door with panels, louvers and a fanlight window for ventilation. The window has grilles and an air conditioner console. On the side there is also a stair with urns that leads to a double leaf door with panels, louvers and an appentice with brackets. The eave support is articulated with a series of brackets. The house is made of masonry and matched lumber, and the surface is painted yellow with white details. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.| Origin Name |
