Descripción decolonial
The public square of Yauco represents the great cultural impact of American colonialism on the island. The square was named Washington Square after the American invasion of the island, in honor of the founding father and first president of the United States: George Washington. This is a hegemonic imposition of the Americanization of the island, which has the intention of assimilating and imposing an epistemological coloniality in the face of the Spanish past. It is a way of erasing the Hispanic colonial past on the island with a certain subtlety. This name persisted until February 29, 1984, when it was replaced by the name of the founder of the town of Yauco: Fernando Pacheco de Matos. The kiosk in the image shows the Victorian architectural influence that is typical of Anglo-American culture. The Victorian aestheticization of spaces was a way of bringing the alleged American modernity to areas of economic and cultural development. The children on the kiosk is a contrast of local ethnicity that is not culturally symmetrical to that displayed on the structure, which is alien to Caribbean aesthetics.
