Ramón Emeterio Betances House - Mayagüez - 2011 00005
Description
Detail of a corner and lateral entrance of the house of Ramón Emeterio Betances in Mayagüez, also known as the five arches house. The corner is articulated with a pedestal with ornamental panel from it elevates a pair of plain shaft columns. Above them there are mixtilinear arches that differentiate the facade of the residence. From the pedestal there is an ornate metal railing with flower and leaf motifs. These elements delimit the porch or house gallery where it also stands out a double leaf door with panels, louver and ventilation fanlights. The lateral entrance is accentuated with a gate flanked with pillars. Behind the gate stands out a stair and an appentice supported with brackets. The house is made of masonry, matched lumber and zinc, and its surface is yellow with white details. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betences requested a permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived two years. When he died, his sister, Inés, inherit it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque to acknowledge the love Betances had for Mayagüez.| Origin Name |
