Description

Facade of the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arches house. This house, made of masonry and wood, is elevated on a podium. The facade consists on a gallery delimited by a series of mixtilinear arches elevated on paired columns. These columns are elevated on pedestals, in turn, they separate the ornamental metal railing with leaf and flower motifs. Above the arches and on the panels stands out the star sign inside a sphere. The doors are double leaf with louvers and fanlights panels that allow the ventilation, and the lateral windows have similar characteristics. The roof is a hipped roof with zinc plates and also are distinguished with an appendage with hipped roof and louvers that allow ventilation. On one of the sides there is a gate flanked by two pillars. On the gate there are signs that say: "No estacione". The surface of the residence is painted yellow and white. In front of the house there are several parked automobiles near the sidewalk. In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherit it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque to acknowledge the love Betances had for Mayagüez.
