Descripción decolonial
The intercession of the saints is a belief held by the apostolic nuns of Christianity that has given space to render respect and mercy to angels, saints and blesseds for their closeness to God. The Catholic Church has managed to be an ancient religion based on its universal character and by giving spaces of veneration to people who virtuously lived the word of God on earth such as Blessed Carlos "Charlie" Manuel Rodriguez, who is in the right frame of the image. Pope Saint John Paul II recognized Charlie as a blessed in 2001, making him the first Caribbean blessed. Prior to this recognition, the Catholic Church had made approaches with Puerto Rico by naming the first Puerto Rican cardinal in 1973: Luis Aponte Martinez. These decisions of the Catholic Church reinforced the culturally Catholic identity of Puerto Ricans, leaving the Spanish colonialist past in the background. The great achievements of Puerto Rican nationalism in resisting American Protestant religious colonialism were using Catholicism as a moral shield against Americanization and the transition to accelerated capitalism on the island. These spaces of resistance were led by Spanish peninsulars or children of Spaniards who, after the Spanish-American War of 1898, became part of the Puerto Rican Creole elite, since the new dominant class superstructure would be the United States with the absentee sugar project on the island.
