Descripción decolonial |
The image of two suit clad men, and a group of young children in the door of a rural chapel, surrounded by barb wire and a dirty ditch presents a complex narrative. In the context of a Mennonite photographic collection, the image likely serve as evidence of missionary efforts in Puerto Rico, initiated by the Mennonites as war-time service during World War II in 1943. As practitioners of a pacificist faith, religiously opposed to violence, Mennonites who were drafted into war-time service were sent instead by the US government to serve the nation in other non-violent ways. This included work in rural Puerto Rico. While Mennonites sent to Puerto Rico did provide critical services in health and education, it's also crucial to acknowledge the intertwined interests with missionary work and US and local political and economic agendas, particularly in the context of the New Deal and later Operation Bootstrap. Missionary activities often mirrored a form of "civilizing" rural populations through conversion, reflecting a blend of humanitarian intentions and alignment with broader socio-political dynamics.
