Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Guadalupe - Ponce - 2014 00021

Description

Lateral view of the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Guadalupe located in the coastal city of Ponce. The cathedral has two levels made of masonry and brick with characteristics of the Neoclassic style. The lateral facade of the cathedral has buttress, windows covered with storm shutters and a continuous entablature on which rests a low parapet. In addition, there is a spherical dome crowned with a lantern surrounded with pyramids finishes. Aside from that, in the surroundings you can distinguish a fence modulated by pillars on which there are light poles. You can also distinguish the surroundings of the Ponce public square. The square has garden areas, small metallic fences and buildings with different characteristics. The beginning of the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Guadalupe dates back to 1670 when it was just a royal palm chapel, it was closed in 1820 due to the bad conditions of the building. The start of the current church construction dates back to 1835 and it was inaugurated in 1839. Nonetheless, the 1918 earthquake destroyed both towers which is the reason why it had to be rebuilt with a new design between 1918 and 1937. Years later, in 1984 it was included in the National Register of Historic Places. Subsequently, it was restored again in 1992.
