Descripción decolonial |
During the first decades of the twentieth century, the United States started a public health project for Puerto Rico in which, in addition to increasing the number of health centers throughout the island, it strived to mitigate the main illnesses that afflicted the population. Other efforts were also made to modify their hygiene habits. An example, of this is a series of educational campaigns launched through schools island wide to emphasize the importance of a good dental hygiene. Likewise, local government, from within institutions such as the Division of Community Education, sought to address the need for access and better quality of water supplied to the population, as well as raise public awareness among citizens about the precautions needed prior to its consumption.
