Descripción decolonial
Part of the ambitious project of Operation Hands on Work was the massive construction of housing developments with an Americanized planning model that is easy to appreciate by the symmetry in the design of the homes. The development of these houses implied a displacement of slum settlements to make room for urban modernization, which only left a mark on Puerto Rican social classes. The creation of suburbs for the wealthy class and housing developments for the middle class, so the space was reconfigured from a socio-urban segregation. There is a coloniality of knowledge with the imposition of a modernist architecture in particular, whose aesthetics are not consonant with Puerto Rican and represented a displacement of the form of construction of the vernacular houses of the subaltern classes. With the high temperatures of the Caribbean, these houses are not appropriately designed for the Caribbean climate, which represents a certain architectural ignorance about the climate of Puerto Rico on the part of the architects. For example, vernacular Caribbean houses often had high, sloped roofs and wooden windows for better air circulation and interior patios for better air circulation.
