Descripción decolonial
Old San Juan went from being a militaristic and clerical city to becoming a site of tourist exploitation. A characteristic of Old San Juan are its streets made of slag cobblestones, installed in the streets of the capital at the end of the 19th century. Today it is considered historical heritage, as is the church of San José. This church was built between 1532 and 1735 by the Dominican order. This remains as a reminder of Puerto Rico's Hispanic Catholic colonial past, where power was unilaterally concentrated in the church. It went from being an axis of sociopolitical power to being a tourist building after the US invasion of the island in 1898. The US tourist exploitation in Old San Juan began to make changes to the streets to adjust them to vehicular traffic. In the front of the church of San José was tarred and the characteristic aesthetic of Old San Juan of slag cobblestones was stripped away. The current capitalist ideology was reinforced by Fordism and the growing individualization of transportation in Puerto Rico, which was previously by tram.
