| Descripción decolonial |
The accumulation of trash is evidence of the marked marginalization of social classes and the serious ecological damage caused by capitalist consumerism. A group of government officials can be seen celebrating what appears to be the opening of a landfill on Isla Grande. We must remember that Isla Grande was a development project for a military installation using landfill to reclaim land from the sea. This part of the island of San Juan was Puerto Rico's first airport and a military base. We can also see Carlos E. Chardón on the left dressed in white surrounded by several government officials. There are two elements that intersect with each other: the capitalism of the tourist industry and the power of the United States military. The excessive pollution in these spaces on Isla Grande is a way of remembering that consumerism causes the accumulation of deposits that affect the environment, even more so in the epicenter of capital and political power.
