Descripción decolonial
There are a large number of people shopping in local stores in San Juan, Puerto Rico. One of the stores is the Ramirez hardware store and the other is called La Tienda Nueva. In both stores, two signs can be seen in English: Pabco Paint for the hardware store and Sundial Shoes for the new store. The change of signs to the English language in a Spanish-speaking population is a form of semiotic coloniality. There is an alienation of knowledge to Americanize the population so that they learn the English language. The production of local goods has plummeted as consumer capitalism accelerates on the island, and the social dynamics of spaces in the metropolitan area will depend more on the importation of goods.
