Descripción decolonial
This abandoned building is the Union and Amparo Lodge No. 44 of Caguas. It is an imposing neoclassical building that was built in 1923 by the Czechoslovak architect Antonin Nechodoma. For the Creole elites, Freemasonry represented a secret space for fraternization, where the principles of liberalism were shared. Such ideas are typical of the French Revolution, which influenced the political thinking of the Puerto Rican bourgeoisie, who were eager to expel the Spanish from Puerto Rico. They organized the Grito de Lares, one of the most important events of the Puerto Rican independence movement that was suppressed by the Spanish authorities in 1868. The arrival of the United States gave them the freedom of association and to build their lodges in public spaces, without fear of being persecuted. What remains of this lodge are its ruins, representing the fall of Masonic power on the island and at the same time, its occultism. The collapse of masonic influence in politics and economics is due to the gradual disappearance of the Puerto Rican bourgeoisie, which has been displaced by foreign capital.
