Descripción decolonial
Traditional cockfights date back to beginning of the Spanish colonization of Puerto Rico. Despite being regulated, it is not until the United States invasion of 1898 that these gatherings were prohibited in the island, as well as series of measures imposed to eradicate from Puerto Rican culture those elements which could tie it to its Spanish colonial past. This action, along with the conflicts raised by the implantation of a military government and other preexisting social discomforts, aroused the repudiation of several sectors of the population against this affront to Puerto Rican identity and coexistence. As a means of resistance, those sectors in discontent rooted to the very elements intended to be supplanted, in defiance to the colonial order and cultural reaffirmation. For example, clandestine cockfights were still organized throughout the island during the first decades of the twentieth century.
