Descripción decolonial
It is the oldest parish in Puerto Rico. The Parish of the Holy Spirit and Saint Patrick of Loíza dates to around the year 1645, mentioned by a chronicler. On its door it says in Latin the following: Ego sum ostium per me si quis introierit, salvabitur. Translated into Spanish it would be “I am the door: if anyone enters through me, he will be saved.” This is a reference to the Bible written in the gospel of John 10:9. This was the same door that laid the foundations of an Afro-Hispanic cultural melting pot that today endures in Loíza, recognized for being an Afro-descendant municipality. Under Spain, African religions brought by slaves such as Yoruba were repressed, and they used the figures of the Virgin Mary to represent their gods. This type of religious syncretism gave rise to Santeria, which is today commonly practiced in the Hispanic Antilles. The birth of this religion originates from maroon populations and is currently an essential part of the Afro-Caribbean identity.
