Descripción decolonial |
The San Juan Heads Lighthouse is a neoclassical lighthouse built in 1880 to facilitate navigation for Spanish ships. Its main purpose was to guide Spanish galleons en route to Honduras and the Gulf of Mexico, since Cape San Juan was a geographical reference point for sailors. There was a need for Spain to build a lighthouse in the region to facilitate navigation in Fajardo at night. In 1882, the construction of the lighthouse was completed, which represents territorial control by the Spanish colonizers to reduce all possibilities of smuggling in informal ports and piracy in general. What the light of the lighthouse usually represents as a sign of hope, for Puerto Rico, was the modernization of the chains that keep the island imprisoned from any contact outside its colonizer. Cultural insularity has occurred particularly due to the isolationism in which Puerto Rico has been plunged as a colony from the rest of the world.
