The Puerto Rican Athenaeum - San Juan (Old San Juan) - 2011 00023
Description
The Ateneo Puertorriqueño located at Puerta de Tierra in Old San Juan. It was founded in 1876 and constructed by the engineer Ramón Carbia Burt in 1923. It is the oldest cultural institution in Puerto Rico, also known as "la Docta Casa." Its architectural style is representative of the Moorish Revival style. It was nominated to enter the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is painted white and terracotta. Part of the facade can be observed. The upper half of the facade has an eave covered by tiles supported by wooden corbels. It also has two multifoil arches interrupted by two pilasters with tiles at the top. A wall with three-line moldings, a torch-shaped ornamentation supported by a straight bracket, and two glass windows with hinged wooden frames can be observed on the right side of the image. On the lower part of the facade are high-relief friezes with representations of nine masculine figures, each with objects in their hands. This piece is known as "Friso de la Cultura," sculpted by the Italian artist Arrighini. Part of an entablature and a pilaster that has tiles with floral designs can also be partially observed in the image. In front of the facade are streetlights and shrubs. The Ateneo Puertorriqueño was founded to promote the theater, music, film, literature, history, science, the moral and political sciences, and the visual arts in Puerto Rico.| Origin Name |
