Descripción decolonial
During the years prior to the United States invasion of Puerto Rico in 1898, social discontent with the Spanish rule spread throughout the island. Hunger, amongst other social discomforts, was one of many other reasons why a considerable section of the population welcomed the promises of liberty, justice and humanity proclaimed by the United States empire at the time of its irruption at the town of Guánica; reaching a point where some Puerto Ricans served as scouts to the invading troops. On the contrary, once the hostilities were over, the economic crisis increased, production and commerce plummeted, and Puerto Ricans were left at the mercy of the United States economy and political administration.
