Ramón Emeterio Betances House - Mayagüez - 2011 00029
Detail of the railing and facade from the Ramón Emeterio Betances house in Mayagüez, also known as the five arch house. The railing is made of metal and shows leaf and flower motifs. The house is made of masonry and matched lumber, is elevated on a podium with panels decorated with the star inside a sphere sign. In addition, the pedestals where the paired columns from the gallery and porch of the house elevate, are visible. Similarly, stands out a double leaf door with luminaries and panels. The residence surface is yellow with white details. In front of the house there is an automobile and a sign that says: "No estacione, zona de carga y descarga, lunes a viernes 7:00 a. m. a 3:00 p. m., ordenanza #43, serie: 2000-01. $75 Multa". In 1865, Ramón Emeterio Betances requested the permit to built this masonry house, where he only lived for two years. When he died, his sister Inés, inherited it. The house was affected by the 1918 earthquake. In 2006, the city mayor gave back the name of Betances to the street and put in front of the residence a plaque that acknowledges the love Betances had for Mayagüez.
